What causes misfiring in a vehicle and how to fix it?

A misfire is the type of malfunction that drivers "feel" the most but is the most difficult to describe. In some vehicles, it appears as a slight shaking at idle, in some, a significant shaking while accelerating, and in some, it appears as "not eating gas". the symptom when How it turns out is half the diagnosis.

Most common causes

  1. Ignition system: Expiration of spark plug, ignition coil and spark plug wires. It usually becomes evident at low speeds and under load.
  2. Fuel system: Contamination of injectors, clogged fuel filter or low fuel pump pressure. It can be seen as "cutting" at high rpm.
  3. Air leakage: Leaks in the intake manifold gasket, vacuum hoses or turbo line. In this case, the engine falls into "lean mixture" and idle becomes erratic.
  4. EGR/VVT/timing: Soot binding of the EGR valve, wear in the variable timing system; stalling, especially when starting cold and at low revs.
  5. Engine mechanics: Low compression, valve adjustment or stuck valve. This picture usually becomes clear after other options are eliminated.
  6. Electronics/sensor: Incorrect data of crank-speed sensor, oxygen (lambda) sensor and air mass meter.

Diagnostic order: why do we say "measurement first"?

The most expensive mistake in a misfire is to replace parts by guessing; because the symptoms of the above six causes are similar to each other. The sequence we followed in the workshop:

  • Reading fault log: Is there an ignition leak, which cylinder?
  • Live data: Temperature, air-fuel ratio, ignition advance and lambda values are monitored in real time.
  • Compression and leak test: It becomes clear whether it is due to mechanical or management system reasons.
  • Smoke test if necessary: Invisible suction leaks are detected.

The output of these measurements takes the question of "which part will change" from guesswork to evidence.

First guess based on symptom

SymptomProminent possibility
Irregular idling, difficult starting in the morningAir leak, EGR, valve adjustment
Jerking when accelerating, shearing under loadIgnition coil/spark plug, fuel pressure
Stuttering in hot engine, normal in coldInjector, sensor data
Constant stuttering + power loss + oil burningLow compression (mechanical)

When not to drive?

engine warning light if it's flashingDo not force the vehicle if the misfire becomes persistent or if there is thick black/white smoke coming from the exhaust. These tables quickly fatigue expensive parts such as catalysts and turbos; A small malfunction turns into a big expense.

Can it be prevented with maintenance?

To a large extent, yes: complying with the manufacturer's recommended spark plug replacement interval, not neglecting the fuel filter, avoiding poor quality fuel and early sealing of leaks in the intake line will seriously reduce the risk of misfire.

If your vehicle has a misfire: at what speed, whether it is hot or cold, for how long - tell us these and we will make a preliminary evaluation over the phone.

Does your vehicle have such a symptom?

Explain the symptom over the phone; Let us provide preliminary information free of charge and make an appointment if necessary.
