Why can't this work "wait"?
When the timing belt breaks or the chain skips a tooth, timing is disrupted; valves and pistons are in the same place at the same time. The result is usually bent valves and a damaged cylinder head — hence the engine tidying job.
Repair of an engine whose timing is broken will cost many times more than the timely replacement. Therefore, it is not right to expect "there is no sound, it stops".
Which tasks are done together?
A timing belt or chain job is not a one-piece job; While it is disassembled, the surrounding parts are also evaluated:
- Timing belt / chain and sprocket set
- Tensioner bearings and guide bearings
- Circulation (water pump)
- Timing cover and oil seals
- If V-belt and tensioner are required
Since most of these parts are accessible in the same disassembly, doing them together reduces labor costs.
Belt or chain — how to tell?
Engine type is decisive: Many TSI/TDI engines of the VAG group use chains, some use belts. The main criterion in the chain is sound and elongation measurement:
- Brief "chain noise" (jingling) on cold start-up
- Elongation value approaching the manufacturer's limit
- Failure of the tension mechanism to do its job
The chain is not "for life"; It is evaluated together with tensioners and guides.

At how many kilometers should the timing belt be changed?
Manufacturer range varies by engine type; usually kilometers or is given in years. Whichever comes first is valid — the belt also ages on low-mileage vehicles.
Is it possible to just change the belt and leave the tensioner?
Not recommended. Tensioners and bearings fatigue as much as the belt; Leaving it unattended may cause premature wear of the new belt or timing slippage.
Chain noise is heard, should it be changed immediately?
Brief noise during cold start does not always mean immediate malfunction; However, if the sound becomes continuous or the extension approaches the limit, it should be done without waiting. We measure for decision.
