Diesel injector malfunction: symptoms, diagnosis and correct intervention

Injectors, which are considered the heart of the diesel engine, spray fuel within milliseconds and at very high pressure. If these sensitive parts fail, the vehicle is usually gradually It breaks down: first slight shaking, then smoke, finally loss of power. An injector problem that is not diagnosed correctly can cause much more expensive damage to the pump and engine.

Most common symptoms

• Vibration and irregular operation at idle: Especially noticeable on a cold engine.
• Black smoke: Unburnt fuel. It occurs when the spray pattern is disrupted.
• White/blue smoke: It may be the result of the injector leaking (dripping) fuel into the combustion chamber.
• Loss of power and poor throttle response: The vehicle becomes cumbersome.
• Increase in fuel consumption: Significant rise in the same ride.
• Hard work / long starting: Especially in the mornings.
• Fuel smell and fuel smell in engine oil: It is a serious sign of a leak.

PD engine or common rail?

There are two main diesel fuel systems in the VAG group:

• PD (Pumpe-Düse): The injectors are driven mechanically from the camshaft. Fault symptoms are harsher and clearer.
• Common rail: Fuel is pressurized into a common line, the injectors are opened electronically. It operates quieter, but pressure and spray values ​​are much more critical.

Knowing which system you have directly affects the diagnostic method.

Diagnostic sequence in the workshop

1. Reading fault log: Which cylinder is irregular, what is the fuel pressure?
2. Live data (correction values): It monitors how much fuel the injectors are trying to balance per cylinder.
3. Return test: The amount of fuel that the injector leaks back is measured.
4. Pressure and leakage tests: The overall health of the system is visible.

These measurements take the decision "the injector will be changed" from guesswork to evidence. This discipline is especially important because unnecessary parts replacement is very expensive in a diesel system.

Cleaning or renovation?

• Cleaning: Works well for light contamination and irregular spraying; It should be done with the right equipment.
• Revision: In case of moderate wear, it is the method of renewal with original parts.
• Change: It is inevitable if body and valve wear is severe. New injectors in the vehicle coding (adaptation) must; If this step is skipped the engine will not run properly.

In any case, there is an additional rule: The origin of injector failure may be fuel quality. Neglecting the fuel filter is as damaging as a leaking injector.

When is it urgent?

Do not drive the vehicle if there is a fuel smell in the engine oil, fuel leaking from the injector body, or a "fuel pressure" warning. This condition dilutes the engine oil and paves the way for bearing damage.
