DSG oil maintenance: when and why should it be done?

Oil in dual-clutch transmissions (DSG / S tronic) is much more than oil in an ordinary transmission: at the same time lubrication, cooling and hydraulic pressure undertakes his duties. That's why DSG oil maintenance is as critical a maintenance item as engine oil; When delayed, the clutch and mechatronics unit wear out simultaneously.

Dry clutch or wet clutch?

• Dry clutch (e.g. DQ200): The oil works in the mechatronic unit, not in the clutch area. The oil volume is smaller in this transmission and the maintenance requirement is different.
• Wet clutch (e.g. DQ250, DQ381, DL501): Clutches operate in an oil bath. Oil both cools the clutch and carries clutch material dust.

The maintenance schedule and the type of oil used are different for the two. There is no single oil called "DSG oil"; Oil of the wrong specification can quickly destroy the transmission.

What should be the maintenance interval?

The most accurate source is the manufacturer's maintenance plan. How many steps does an oil change take?

These two steps (leveling + adaptation) are what distinguish DSG maintenance from an ordinary oil change. A service that says "We drained and filled the oil" is putting the transmission at risk.

What happens if maintenance is delayed?

• The clutch pack wears out faster, start-up shudder begins.
• Valves in the mechatronics unit become clogged with dirty oil; the pressure becomes irregular.

If there is vibration, is just changing the oil enough?

No; Diagnosis is required first. The shaking sometimes comes from clutch wear, sometimes from the mechatronics, sometimes from the engine side.
