"The oil light burned out, I added it; two weeks later it was gone again." This sentence summarizes almost all of the oil burning complaints that come to the workshop. It's not about guessing where the oil goes by measurement find; Because there are seven different causes that cause the same symptom and their solutions are completely different from each other.
What does the color of exhaust smoke tell you?
- Blue/gray smoke: Burning of fat. It usually becomes apparent at first start-up in the morning or when you let off gas.
- White smoke + sweet smell: The coolant may be burning; This is not oil burning, this is a problem caused by the head gasket.
- Black smoke: Unburned fuel; It points to the injector side in diesel and the rich mixture side in gasoline.
Classifying smoke correctly is half the diagnosis.
Seven main reasons to burn fat
- Ring wear: The most common reason. Compression drops, oil leaks into the cylinder. It is expected in high mileage engines.
- Valve guides and seals: Especially if there is blue smoke at first start-up in the morning and then it stops, check this side.
- Crankcase ventilation (PCV/breather): The clogged breather creates pressure in the crankcase and pushes oil into the combustion chamber. Its repair is relatively economical; Early diagnosis prevents major expenses.
- Turbo oil leak: When the clearance in the turbo shaft increases, oil moves to the intake or exhaust side. Smoke and power loss often occur together under load.
- Roller surface damage: Scratched rollers after overheating or lack of oil. It requires revision.
- Incorrect oil viscosity: Oil that does not meet the norm required by the manufacturer may increase consumption. It is a factor that seems small but is often overlooked.
- Oil leak (not burning): If there is a loss but no smoke, the oil is dripping from somewhere. The crankcase, head gasket, crank seal and turbo line are checked.
Which test shows what?
- Compression test: Shows the condition of the cylinders; It is the first step in ring/cover separation.
- Cylinder leak test: It clarifies whether the loss is due to the ring, valve or gasket.
- Endoscopic control: The inside of the cylinder is viewed without disassembling the engine; Scratches and soot structure are visible.
- Turbo control: The shaft clearance and oil line are inspected.
- PCV test: Crankcase pressure is measured.
This order is important: A problem caused by PCV or turbo should be eliminated before going for overhaul because "there is wear in the engine". Otherwise, a large unnecessary expense would be incurred.
There is such a thing as manufacturer tolerance
Manufacturers consider a certain amount of oil consumption as "normal"; This rate varies depending on the brand and engine. So "my vehicle is losing oil" alone does not mean that the engine is dead. However, if the consumption increases in a short time, is accompanied by smoke, or the oil light turns on frequently, have it checked without waiting.
How do I know when buying second hand?
I asked the seller "were you adding oil between maintenance?" ask; Whatever the answer, check for a spare oil bottle in the trunk. Watch the first start with a cold engine, observe the exhaust. Service check The compression and leak test in our article gives the clearest answer to this issue.
If your vehicle is running low on oil: tell us how much you added, at what time, and the color of the smoke; Let's make a preliminary evaluation over the phone.
