Complaints about the automatic transmission start more smoothly than the DSG: first the gear shifts are a little delayed, then the vibration comes, and finally the vehicle acts like it is "shifting to neutral". Since this climb is considered normal by most drivers, intervention is often delayed. However, in automatic transmission, early diagnosis is the most determining factor of cost (as in DSG).
Which technology, which symptom?
There are three main automatic transmission families in the VAG group and their complaint profiles are different:
- Classic automatic with torque converter (tiptronic): Converter locking and valve stem wear are prominent. The shudder is usually felt at steady speed, light throttle.
- Multitronic (CVT): It is a chain-pulley system; Slippage and shudder at takeoff may be related to chain tension or valve pressure. It is more sensitive in high torque vehicles.
- Dual clutch with wet clutch (S tronic): Similar to the symptoms on the DSG side; clutch and mechatronics are examined.
Symptom dictionary
| Driver's directions | Possible technical response |
|---|---|
| "When taking off, it stops for a moment and then goes away." | Oil pressure / clutch engagement delay |
| "Slight shaking at constant speed" | Torque converter lock-up |
| "It shakes when shifting" | Valve body/pressure control |
| "The revs are increasing, the speed is not increasing" | Slip; clutch or chain |
| "It's worse in the heat" | Oil temperature and viscosity |
Oil: the most critical item in automatics
Automatic transmission fluid doesn't just lubricate; It generates hydraulic pressure and transports heat. Therefore:
- The wrong type of oil should not be used. Each transmission has its own specification.
- The level should be adjusted depending on the temperature. Incorrect level will cause slippage or rough transitions.
- For heavy use, the interval should be shortened. City stop-start and hot climate rapidly consume oil life.
Diagnostic order
- Fault log reading: which code, which pressure value?
- Live data: oil temperature, pressures, lockout status.
- Oil control: level, color, odor, particles.
- Pressure tests and pre-dismantling evaluation if necessary.
What should not be done?
- "I added it, it went away" approach: masks the symptom in the short term, may accelerate internal wear.
- Long distance and trailer use while there are symptoms.
- Changing parts in different services and not measuring the result.
When is it urgent?
gear is wasting, vehicle not taking action or transmission warning light If it is on, do not use the vehicle. Sliding quickly burns the friction surfaces and increases the scope of repair.
