Lambda, MAF and crank sensor: tracking down the faulty sensor

14 November 2026 · 2 min read · Osman Karaçör · Reis Garage

Electrical Sensor Diagnostics

The "five senses" of the modern engine are sensors. The engine control unit adjusts fuel and ignition timing at the millisecond level with the data from these sensors. When one of the sensors produces faulty data, the symptom often looks like a “mechanical failure” — loss of power, stalling, rough idle. Therefore, the first thing to do in case of sensor suspicion is not to replace the part, reading live data.

Lambda (oxygen) sensor

It indicates whether the fuel mixture is correct by measuring the oxygen rate in the exhaust.

  • Symptoms: Increase in fuel consumption, emission error, rough idling, unresponsiveness.
  • Important distinction: Lambda sensor fault, rich/lean mixture result It may also happen. Replacing the sensor when there is air leakage will not solve the problem.

MAF (air mass meter)

It measures the amount of air entering the engine; Adjusts fuel according to load.

  • Symptoms: Clumsiness, black smoke (in diesel), fuel increase, stalling, sometimes jerking when shifting gears.
  • Critical point: Dirty MAF behaves like defective MAF. For models that can be cleaned, cleaning is tried first; However, it is also possible to cause damage during cleaning.

Crank (and camshaft) position sensor

It determines the timing and firing order of the engine. If its data is lost, the engine will not start or will have difficulty.

  • Symptoms: Long starting, sudden stopping, tachometer dropping, "engine not starting" statement.
  • Critical point: These sensor malfunctions are sometimes temperature-related: it starts when the engine is cold and stops when it warms up. Fault record may not always be available.

Why live data first?

Because the number produced by the sensor does not always reflect the truth. In the workshop:

  1. Error recording + freeze frame data is read: under what condition did the error occur?
  2. Live values are monitored: It is compared to the expected range.
  3. Physical check is carried out: Connector, plumbing, air leak, dirt.
  4. Only after that, the part decision is given.

This discipline eliminates the “piece ball” method (trial and error in sequence).

Simple rules to extend sensor life

  • Change the air filter in time; Polluted air damages MAF.
  • Do not direct water to the electronic connectors during engine washing.
  • Do not delay oil leaks; Oil destroys the sensor and installation insulation.
  • Pay attention to fuel quality.
Do you have any suspicions about the sensors in your vehicle? State the symptom and fault code, if any; Let us explain over the phone which data needs to be measured.

Does your vehicle have such a symptom?

Explain the symptom over the phone; Let us provide preliminary information free of charge and make an appointment if necessary.
