Lack of coolant is one of the malfunctions that drivers most often describe as "invisible": there are no drops on the ground, but the level in the expansion tank drops within weeks. So the question is — where does the water go? There are two possibilities: running out but you can't see it, or runs inward and burns inside the engine. The second possibility is much more serious.
Leakage to the outside: places invisible to the naked eye
- Expansion tank cover: The lid loses its pressure setting and throws the water out as steam. It is the most frequently overlooked and cheapest option.
- Water pump / thermostat housing: Plastic body cracks are a known issue, especially in the VAG group. Leakage most often occurs after a hot engine is turned off, the trace evaporates.
- Radiator and hoses: Stone-induced small holes, clamp loosening.
- Interior heater radiator (heater core): The leak is inside the cabin; It leaves an oily film and sweet smell on the glass.
- EGR cooler (diesel): When the unit that cools the exhaust gas cracks, water comes out of the exhaust as steam.
Inward leakage: why is it the most dangerous?
If there is a cylinder head gasket or head crack, coolant will enter the combustion chamber or oil passage. Symptoms:
- from exhaust dense white smoke and sweet smell
- Under the oil filler cap brown, milky consistency (emulsion)
- Increased engine oil level (when water mixes with oil)
- Pressure building in the radiator, hardening of the hoses
This table gives results in a short time without dismantling the engine. If not intervened early, the beds will come into contact with water and engine overhaul becomes inevitable.
Diagnosis: not a guess, but a pressure test
The most reliable method when there is no trace on the ground is a pressure test: the cooling system is pressurized by a special pump and the coating rate is monitored. This test:
- It determines whether there is a leak or not,
- If there is a leak point shrinks,
- In case of suspicion of inward leakage, it is supported by exhaust gas test.
UV dye and smoke testing also reveals invisible traces. “Add water and move on” seems to work in the short term; But when an airlock occurs, local areas of the engine overheat and the damage increases.
At which table do not wait?
- If the temperature indicator is above normal,
- Cold blowing from the heater but the engine is hot (airlock sign).
- If there is dense white smoke coming from the exhaust,
- If the oil has an emulsion consistency.
The cooling system is the most typical part where small leaks cause major damage; That's why we measure first instead of disassembling and replacing for checks.
If the water level is falling: tell me how much you added over how long and whether there is smoke; Let's give guidance over the phone.
