Things to know before engine software (Stage 1)

Engine software (popularly called "chip tuning" or Stage 1) is the updating of turbo pressure and fuel/ignition maps to operate differently than manufacturer values. It is preferred for some drivers with the expectation of performance increase, for others with the expectation of fuel economy. However, the software requires mechanical preparation and cannot be applied equally to every vehicle. In this article, we objectively explain what you need to know before making your decision.

What does software change?

  • Turbo pressure (boost): Higher pressure means more air.
  • Fuel amount and timing: Enriching the mixture produces power.
  • Ignition advance: It is optimized with appropriate fuel.
  • Torque limiter: It is a critical limit to protect the transmission and clutch.

Things to check before

  1. Mechanical health of the engine: Compression, oil consumption, chain/tensioner condition. A problematic engine wears out faster with software.
  2. Torque limit of the transmission: Especially in DSG, the torque limit that the clutch and mechatronics unit can withstand should not be exceeded.
  3. Turbo and cooling system: Intercooler, turbo actuator, radiator.
  4. Fuel quality: High advance may require high octane.
  5. Brake and suspension: If power increases, stopping and handling should also match this.

Wrong expectations

  • "With software, each engine increases by 100 horsepower": Increase; Varies depending on engine, turbo and fuel system. The promise must be measurable.
  • "Fuel consumption will definitely drop": Economy depends on driving style; Consumption increases in performance use.
  • "The originality of the vehicle remains intact": The software can be detected by the manufacturer; may affect warranty coverage.
  • "Applicable to every vehicle": Some engines/transmissions are not suitable for such increases.

Legal and inspection size

There are emission and inspection regulations that vary by country. Exhaust emissions may change after software; This must be evaluated for inspection and legal liability. Therefore, the implementation decision is not only a technical but also a legal decision.

After application

  • Datalog: Pressure, advance and temperature values are monitored to verify that the software is within the safe range.
  • Maintenance intervals: The oil change is usually shortened.
  • Fuel: Do not go below the octane value recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Observation: If knocking, overheating or malfunction occurs, immediate action is taken.

Neutral advice

The software is a pleasant update when implemented in the right tool and within the right limits. However, the "software first, then maintenance" order is wrong; indeed first health check, then softwareis. Retrofitting a vehicle with a tired engine brings happiness in the short term, but huge costs in the long term.

If you are considering software for your vehicle: share model, engine code, transmission and mileage; Let's talk about the suitability assessment on the phone.
