When to change brake discs and pads? Symptoms and the right decision

23 November 2026 · 2 min read · Serdar Özdemir · Reis Garage

Brake Maintenance Safety

Brake pads and discs are the most worn safety parts of the vehicle. But "at how many kilometers does it change?" There is no single answer to the question; because life; It varies greatly depending on driving style, vehicle weight, quality of parts used and road conditions. That's why the right approach is not based on kilometers, but measurement and indication is to look.

When to change brake pads?

  • Thickness: Each pad has a minimum thickness value. The pad that falls below this value is replaced.
  • Wear indicator: Most pads have a metal warning tongue; It makes a sound when it touches the disc.
  • Change in friction coefficient: If the pad hardens or deteriorates with oil/heat, braking distance will be longer.

When to change the disc?

The disc has a longer life than the pad; But every disk runs out one day:

  • Thickness limit: If the thickness measured from the disc surface is below the manufacturer's limit, replacement is required.
  • Skewness (sway): It becomes evident with vibration in the brake pedal.
  • Deep scratches and grooves: It prevents proper contact of the pads.
  • Cracks / heat spots on the surface: It occurs after overheating.

The overlooked factor that affects braking distance: brake fluid

Brake fluid attracts moisture (hygroscopic). As moisture increases over time, hydraulics lose their boiling point and cause the pedal to "soften". that's why Brake fluid is also checked periodically and renewed by measuring moisture. Changing only the pads and discs and neglecting the hydraulics is incomplete maintenance.

3 Rules to follow during change

  1. Two wheels together: Pads on the same axle change together; Otherwise, the braking balance will be disrupted.
  2. Component compatibility: The combination of aggressive pads + soft discs can cause noise and wear.
  3. Practice (run-in): Sudden hard braking should be avoided for the first 200–300 km of the new pad-disc pair.

Which symptom requires which control?

SymptomFirst check
Extended distance after hard brakingPads, hydraulics, heat management
pedal shakedisc warpage
Vehicle pulls to one sideCaliper, pad inequality
constant squealingPad thickness and slot
metallic frictionurgent; The brake pad may be worn out

Habits that extend lifespan

  • Using engine brakes on long descents, not using the brakes all the time.
  • Avoiding sudden and unnecessary hard braking.
  • Drying the brakes on a short tour after the vehicle has been washed.
  • Do not neglect cleaning the calipers in winter and on salty roads.
If you are suspicious about your brakes; Tell me the symptom and the last maintenance mileage, let's make the control plan together.

Does your vehicle have such a symptom?

Explain the symptom over the phone; Let us provide preliminary information free of charge and make an appointment if necessary.
