Brake squeal is the symptom that drivers have the most "hard time identifying"; Because not every sound is a malfunction. There is a vital difference between a thin squeal heard when braking first in the morning and the constant metallic friction. In this article sounds when did you come out, what kind of sound is it and What is it seen with? We separate them accordingly.
Evaluation by sound types
| Sound | When is it coming out? | Possible cause | Urgency |
|---|---|---|---|
| subtle squeal | In the morning / in humid weather, first on the brakes | Moisture/rust film on surface | Normal, it goes away after a few brakes |
| constant squealing | On every brake | Pad wear indicator | follow closely |
| Squeak/whistle | At slow speed, in traffic | Pad-disk incompatibility, dirt | Must be checked |
| metallic friction | Continuous, increases during braking | Pad worn out, metal rubbing on metal | urgent |
| Rhythmic "knock-knock" | At every wheel turn | Disc surface / wheel nut / stone | Must be checked |
| "Knock" on takeoff | Just on the first move | pad housing gap | Generally harmless |
Why squealing isn't always bad news
High-performance or semi-metallic pads tend to squeal when cold and at low speeds. This is not a malfunction, it is the character of the material. In newly installed brake pads, there may be a "run-in" noise in the first few hundred kilometers. However:
- sound with every brake and it increases gradually,
- If the braking distance is extended,
- If the pedal is shaking,
- If the vehicle pulls to one side,
In this case, do not wait.
Why is the metallic friction sound urgent?
When the pad wears out and its metal base comes into contact with the disc, the disc surface wears out rapidly. In a short time, the disk becomes the part that needs to be replaced and the cost doubles. More importantly, braking power is seriously reduced. It's not a situation where you can say "it will last for a few more days".
Simple reasons that trigger brake noise
- Pad seat contamination: Dust and dirt prevent the free movement of the pad.
- Pass on the disc: It occurs on the surface of vehicles lying for a long time; It usually clears in a few brakes.
- New pad + old disc incompatibility: If the disc surface is rough, it may cause noise and vibration.
- Rear brake system: Squeaks originating from the drum/drum or handbrake mechanism should not be ignored.
What to check in the workshop?
- Pad thickness and wear indicator,
- Disc thickness, warpage and surface condition,
- Free movement of calipers,
- Brake fluid level and age,
- Tire and lug nut condition.
What can you do as a driver?
- your voice when Note that it comes on (in the morning, every time you brake, or at slow speed).
- Share with us additional symptoms such as pulsation and pulling in the brake pedal.
- Instead of saying "Let's wait, it will pass", get a clear answer with a short check.
Braking does not belong to the "we'll see later" category.
