What should be done in a vehicle that is overheating and what should be checked afterwards?

3. Wait for it to cool. At least 20–30 minutes. If steam escaping and hissing sound continues, continue waiting.
4. Check the level after the engine has cooled. Look at the lines on the expansion tank; If it is missing, complete it gradually.

Three classic mistakes made on a hot engine

• Opening the pressurized hot system: Boiling water and jets of steam are serious burn risks.
• Just add water and continue: Water does not meet the boiling point raising and rust inhibiting effects of antifreeze; it also masks the leak.
• Turning off the air conditioner when the temperature is high and continuing: Turning on the heater may cool the engine a little, but the real solution is to stop.

Post-heat checklist

• Pressure test: Are there any leaks in the cooling system?
• Cover and seal control: Is there white smoke or oil emulsion in the exhaust?
• Cover deformation: Cylinder head plane inspection (machining may be required).
• Thermostat and fan: Does the fan turn on or does the thermostat turn on on time?
• Water pump: Belt/body control.
• Oil and bearings: Whether the oil loses its properties after heating.

When is revision required?

The severity and duration of the heat are decisive. If the cap is cracked, the gasket is burnt or the cylinder is scored engine overhaul comes to the fore. It is wrong to think of this as "overheating, the engine is definitely dead" and to continue as "nothing happened". The only correct way: cooling pressure test + compression test.

To prevent recurrence

• Keep the antifreeze mixture seasonal; Do not operate with water only.
• Have the hose, clamp and tank cover checked during periodic maintenance.
• Do not expect small water losses to "go away on their own". Overheating is almost always the result of an underlying problem.
